Artomatic is an annual pop-up art show, occurring in buildings slated for demolition. Artists of all mediums are welcome to show their works and can design and decorate their space however they see fit. Artomatic is happening this year in Crystal City and ends May 6th 2017.
Artomatic began in 1999 when a building on Florida Avenue became the venue for a temporary art space. Every nook and cranny of that building which was slated for demolition became, for a short time an art gallery. The concept was so popular that the artists formed the non-profit that is still hosting these events 18 years later. Artomatic takes place in and around Washington, DC in buildings that will soon be demolished.
This was our first time at Artomatic and it had a somewhat post- apocalyptic vibe, as if all the artists had come together in this abandoned office space to save their art. The exhibits take up seven floors of an old corporate building in Crystal City. Offices are transformed into installations and immersive rooms. A performance stage takes the place of an old meeting room.
Artomatic warrants multiple trips for the real art enthusiasts. Photographs, paintings, installations and statues line the corridors and rooms in an overwhelming display of creativity. We only saw two floors before we became totally unable to appreciate any more, and hungry- looking at art while hungry is a no go. There is a small bar on site which sells ice cream sandwiches and alcohol, should you need to be held over until your next meal.
