Hive is here!
It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for! The official beginning of the summer block party at the National Building Museum. I’m a member of the museum, something I encourage you all to be, so Ooey and I have been watching this year’s installation, Hive, undergo construction for a few weeks now. I’m lucky they still let us in after a mishap we had because after today’s early preview I know we’ll be spending a ton of time in this exhibit.
Hive = girl power
Hive is the installation taking over the grand hall this year. Designed by Studio Gang; a woman run, award winning design firm based in Chicago and New York. Jeanne Gang, founder of Studio Gang, points out that within the main hall of the Building Museum the acoustics create an almost outdoor environment, it’s hard to hear anything about 10 feet away.
Hive creates three chambers within the main lobby where people can congregate, and hear one another. The chambers are made of 2,578 thick paper tubes of 90 different sizes and create the feeling of being surrounded by trees. Other things you may hear within the exhibit are wind chimes and xylophones, each side chamber has noise makers that kids will love to engage with.
Hive is the tallest installation to ever be in the main hall and the tops out at 56.5 feet. The colors of the tube were chosen by Studio Gang and the pink inner layer pays homage to the Women’s March on Washington DC who’s defining color was pink.

Free community days
I personally think that everyone should be a member of the National Building Museum. It’s $90/year. Let me say that again, it’s NINTEY DOLLARS A YEAR- there are play spaces that cost that a month! Benefits include free access to Hive and the two distinct play areas for children, and admission for four people (who do not have to be related to you) with every visit. But if you’re not convinced you can go see Hive for FREE during Ward days, see schedule below. (A Ward is a DC thing).
July 18, 9–11 am : Ward Days (Ward 3, 8)
July 25, 9–11 am: Ward Days (Ward 1, 6)
August 1, 9–11 am: Ward Days (Ward 4, 2)
August 8, 9–11 am: Ward Days (Ward 5, 7)

And don’t miss Wright on the Walls
Also at the National Building Museum right now is Wright on the Walls. This is one of those exhibits that I thought was too good to be true when I read the press release but totally delivered! You can read my review, here.
