What’s the story behind this website?
DoDCwithKids.com is a celebration of family life in Washington DC. As I transitioned from working full-time to staying at home with my daughter I knew I needed a way to motivate myself to get out and explore and to enjoy DC to its fullest. I’ve heard from long time residents of the city that living here is completely new to them once they have their children. I’ve also heard from tourists who have mixed reviews on the city, while visiting with their children.
This city is so much more than politics and whomever is currently in the White House. This is the capital of the United States, and that is part of the DC identity but not all of it. This is a vibrant, yet transient city and the goal of this website is to introduce its inhabitants (visitors & residents) to the great many small businesses, attractions and activities that the city has to offer for families.
My long-term goal with the website is to create a resource on every aspect of family life in the city from daycare to college, for residents. And for tourists I’d like to provide itineraries and hotel recommendations that leave them as in love with DC as it’s inhabitants. I’m passionate about public education and once this website generates revenue I pledge to give back to the cities’ schools that are most in need of additional funding.
Who am I?
My name is Tina, I started this website in the summer of 2016, about three months after relocating here from a suburb of Philadelphia with my husband, infant daughter and our two small dogs.
I’m a military brat, my mother was enlisted in the Air Force for twenty years and our family moved around every so often. I was born in the Netherlands and throughout my childhood we lived in Florida, Nevada and finally Massachusetts. I moved from Las Vegas, Nevada to Barre, Massachusetts halfway through high school. The area grew on me and I went to college at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.
I met my husband my senior year of college, we were rock climbing buddies. Despite failing my final semester of college due to my obsession with the sport I managed to pull it together and get into graduate school studying plant parasitic nematodes, my other passion.
We moved to Delaware for my studies and I spent a lot of time thinking about how to balance my future career with the family I knew I wanted to start. Ultimately I left the PhD track with a masters and took a job in industry, finishing my thesis while on maternity leave.
Our lifestyle in the Delaware/Philly area was not what we wanted for the long-term. The birth of our daughter put into perspective the need to make the changes we wanted to make for our family. In search of a more urban lifestyle we moved to Washington DC in the winter of 2016.
I started this website as an outlet for my need to write, catalog and organize my thoughts. It also seemed a more rewarding pastime than job hunting, in the process I’ve created a job for myself. And have found the family/work balance that I was missing in my past life.
